Rare Crimson Lightning Recorded in the Heavens

Three image specialists in New Zealand have recorded photographs of crimson flashes, among the rarest celestial events on Earth, in which luminous crimson flashes manifest in the atmosphere.

A Remarkable Night of Discovery

This group of artists had originally set out to shoot the Milky Way over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the South Island of the country on a night in October, when they chanced upon the rare phenomenon.

Assuming they would be fortunate to get optimal conditions that evening, but their expedition became “a night to remember,” an individual involved commented.

Upon examining his files for a stellar landscape and discovered he had photographed scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the individual noted. “We just could not believe it – there was a whole bunch of excited exclamations and all sorts going on in the night.”

Explaining Red Sprites

Red sprites are atmospheric energy releases in the mesosphere, produced by thunderstorms. In contrast to traditional lightning that shoots towards the earth, these events shoot upwards towards the higher altitudes, forming structures that are similar to vertical forms, tapered shapes or even marine creatures. The first photograph of a this phenomenon was captured – unintentionally – in that year, by a research unit at the a academic organization.

Brief and Otherworldly Sightings

These events are extremely short-lived – persisting for a mere instant – that they are seldom seen to the naked eye, but a team member got lucky. “I was coincidentally viewing directly at an occurrence when it occurred – just a perfect coincidence looking at the appropriate section of the firmament and I observed a short crimson illumination,” he explained.

Observing the occurrences was a aspiration for this individual, an acclaimed dark sky artist. “It appears as if you’re seeing an impossible sight, it appears mystical … it’s this very deep red colour that is present only momentarily, so it is captivating to witness.”

Skill-Based and Artistic Mastery

Capturing a red sprite requires a proficiency with advanced imaging techniques, as well as an understanding of scientific principles and artistic vision, the individual stated. “This is a highly complex category of art that’s extremely satisfying as well.”

A different team member remarked it was counted as the “most amazing after-dark experiences” of his existence. “I was able to observe the galactic band shining above the horizon while these giant scarlet filaments of illumination moved above a thunderstorm far on the horizon,” he explained.

A Unique Photographic Achievement

Based on his understanding, there are no further recordings showing red sprites and the galactic core from the southern perspective in the same photograph.

“This was a singular occasion when you know you are observing an event you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
